Design and Style of Bait

Soft plastic lures come in a variety of designs, each tailored to mimic different types of prey and suit specific fishing conditions. Among the most popular styles are paddle tails, curly tails, and crustacean imitations.

Paddle Tails

These lures, like the Witch's Brew split tail jerkbaits, are designed with a flat, paddle-shaped tail that creates a vibrating motion as it moves through the water. This design mimics the swimming action of baitfish, making it an excellent choice for targeting predatory fish such as bass and pike.

Curly Tails

Characterized by their spiraled tails, curly tail lures are effective in generating erratic movements that resemble injured prey. This unpredictable motion can trigger strikes from species like walleye and trout that are attracted to easy targets.

Crustacean Imitations

These lures replicate the appearance and movement of crabs, shrimp, or crawfish. For instance, the Razor Craws from have a lifelike design ideal for bottom-dwelling species like redfish and flounder that naturally feed on crustaceans.

Craftsmanship of Bait

There are roughly two kinds of materials used for soft bait, one is soft PVC and the other is TPE.

There are two processing methods, one is to use an injection molding machine to process, that is, the raw materials are plasticized, then injected into the mold, and then cooled to form (usually one mold with multiple cavities to improve production efficiency). The other is a self-made DIY mold. The raw materials are heated and melted into a gel, then injected into the self-made mold, and finally cooled and solidified.

The injection molding machine has high processing efficiency and produces fewer defective products, which is suitable for professional soft bait manufacturers with large supply volumes. For general lure fishing enthusiasts or self-employed individuals who have just started to engage in the production and operation of lure lures, self-made DIY molds can be used for glue filling processing, and the initial investment cost is not high.

PVC soft lures are mostly processed by DIY mold melt glue and glue filling. According to the hardness required by the soft bait, first, mix the PVC powder and plasticizer into a paste in a certain proportion, and then use some conventional equipment (such as an electric heating pot, microwave oven, etc.) to heat to 100~120 degrees, and then spray the melt Put it into the DIY mold, cool and solidify to make the finished product.

Most of the TPE soft lures are processed by injection molding machines. Because the melting temperature of TPE material is relatively high, generally 160~200 degrees, and the fluidity is worse than that of soft PVC. TPE soft bait, such as using DIY mold processing. The molding efficiency is lower, and the difficulty will be greater.

FAQ

Q: What are soft plastic baits made of?

A: Some of the basic supplies required to pour your own soft plastics include Plastisol, worm oil, scent and pigment. Glitter and scent can be added for that ultra-realistic bait, and an infrared thermometer makes quick work of determining correct plastic temperature.

Q: What are the best soft plastic colors for bass?

A: The two most common soft-plastic colors used to catch bass across the country are Watermelon (and those including various flake colors) and Green Pumpkin. These colors are proven and work in a wide range of different fishing conditions.

Q: What are soft plastic lures good for?

A: Soft plastic lures are excellent in creating realistic-looking bait with lifelike movement and flashy colors – and they often have added scent. They can be rigged in various ways, appear weedless, withstand multiple strikes, and are cost-effective.

Q: Should I use a sinker with soft plastics?

A: Adding a sinker to soft plastics is almost always necessary. It helps you cast farther, sink the bait, and create lively movements that attract nearby fish.

Q: Do you need a leader for soft plastics?

A: Yes! You should be using a leader anytime you fish as it aids line strength, prevents breakage, and helps camouflage your line and make your bait appear more realistic.

Q: How do you rig soft plastic?

A: To rig soft plastics, you can slide the plastic around the bend of a hook, or use a jig head. You can also rig soft plastics without a jig head using a sinker and a snail knot.

Q: What size braid for soft baiting?

A: 4kg braid is a good all round strength to use. The next task is to a reel / rod outfit that suits that line class. A reel that can hold 300M of 4kg braid is a good sized reel, with a max drag of 6kg or more.

Q: What size hook for soft plastics?

A: With these aspects in mind, 2/0 to 3/0 hook sizes tend to suit soft-baits from 4-7 inches in length – but we also need to discuss how hook sizes are relative to the thickness of the wire used in their manufacture and their potential strength.
