Advantages of Soft Bait

Realistic Presentation:

Soft baits mimic the texture and movement of live prey with uncanny realism. Their pliability allows them to emulate the wiggles and squirms of natural forage, effectively enticing fish. This lifelike simulation can make a huge difference in triggering a fish's predatory instincts.

Adaptability:

Soft baits are incredibly versatile. They can be rigged in a plethora of ways to match your fishing situation, from the popular Texas and Carolina rigs to the unique wacky style. This versatility allows you to adapt your bait presentation to suit your target species' preferences, enhancing your chances of a successful strike.

Stealthy Approach:

The quiet operation of soft baits can be advantageous when targeting wary or easily spooked fish. Without the loud rattles and vibrations of hard baits, soft baits can subtly sneak into a fish's territory without alarming them, increasing the likelihood of a bite.

Effective in Dense Cover:

The soft, flexible nature of these baits allows them to navigate through thick vegetation without getting snagged, reaching the hidden spots where fish often lurk. This ability can be a game-changer when fishing in areas with heavy cover.

Type of Soft Lures

There are several types of soft plastic lures available in the market, each designed for a specific type of fish and fishing conditions. Some of the most common types include worms, grubs, shad, crawfish, and swimbaits. Consider the type of fish you're targeting and the type of water you'll be fishing in to determine the best type of soft plastic lure to purchase.

Use of Soft Bait

Soft plastics are especially effective for flats fishing, sight-casting and surf fishing because they land quietly. They can also be used right on the surface when rigged weightless. A plastic shrimp is ideal for this when the internal weight is removed and the hook positioned so that it sticks out at the bottom, keeping the body upright. So is a 4- to 8-inch slender plastic body rigged weedless on a large-gap hook, a deadly rig for fishing shorelines and structure. A soft-plastic rigged with a jig head does add noise and weight to the soft bait.

Many anglers sight-fishing on grassy flats remove the internal hook from a plastic shrimp and rig it without the tail fin to swim backward on a larger hook. The point lies right along the back so the lure is almost completely weedless, and it casts much easier and more accurately when rigged this way. Trim back the shrimp with a scissors if a particular fin continues to catch grass.

One or two plastic beads in front of the hook eye can increase the strike potential of almost all soft-plastic rigs. Everyone has their own color favorites; mine include orange, red, chartreuse and black, and I prefer 6 to 8 mm beads. A bead inside the loop formed by the leader when you're tying it to the eye of the hook prevents shrimp bodies and other soft plastics from sliding up the leader after hookup and becoming a target for other fish.

FAQ

Q: What are soft baits best for?

A: Soft baiting is one of the best ways there is to catch fish in less than 30 metres of water, and small boats, kayaks, and inshore fishermen casting these lures with any consistency will be well used to having them smashed by snapper, john dory, kingfish, kahawai, cod, trevally, gurnard, and the list goes on.

Q: Is soft bait better than live bait?

A: You can hop hole to hole much easier with a soft bait, as it stays on a hook better and you can easily change out the style and size of the soft bait to best match the lure you're using. But hole-hopping can be the death to even the liveliest live baits.

Q: When to use soft bait?

A: Soft-baiting can be successful almost anywhere: land-based, along sandy beaches, over reefs and in harbours. When I'm soft-baiting, I will often fish in depths from right up in the shallows out to around 30m. My favoured depth is 12-20m due to the gear we use and locations we fish.

Q: What fish like soft lures?

A: These lures often entice species like Snook, Redfish, and Sea Trout.Flukes mimic the life-like, chaotic action of bait fish, attracting nearby game species. They're another great lure that can be used year-round and in various conditions.

Q: What are the best colors for soft bait?

A: Colors that are good for partly cloudy days include Watermelon seed/red flake, Goby or Smoke. When fishing stained water use colors that are less natural. A couple of colors I would use in stained water on a bright day would be chartreuse, and pink. You need something bright to get the fish's attention.

Q: Do you use a sinker with soft plastics?

A: Absolutely, a sinker helps to get your lure down to the fish, and also gives it extra action as it falls. Swivels are also a good idea, as they help to prevent line twists.

Q: What pound test for soft plastics?

A: Use the heaviest you can get away with based on water clarity. Usually, 12- to 17-pound test will work for mid-sized swimbaits. For jumbo baits, some anglers use 20- to 25-pound-test fluorocarbon or monofilament. Others prefer 50- to 65-pound-test braid with a clear leader of fluoro or mono.
